Merry Christmas To All

It turned out to be a very frustrating day with many games postponed due to the frozen pitches which simply would not defrost quick enough. We will learn from the experience and certainly (if feasible) try to delay first kick offs during January and February until at least 11.00 am to give pitches time to defrost.

Fortunately there were eight games played. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to watch both under 8 games and felt very proud as to the quality of football on show. Both games were very exciting and whilst I am not allowed to publish results, I am pleased to say that both teams left with big smiles on their faces after excellent performances. Great credit to Michael Morgan for the work he has done with the Under 8's this year.

David's Under 10 Pride narrowly lost 3- 2 at Hampton Youth and Bernie's Under 12 Pride were unable to repeat their earlier victory against runaway leaders Eagles FC going down 3-1.

Matthew and Russell's Under 13 Pride continued their excellent form with a good 3-2 win at Hanworth, and Brian's Under 16 Lions repeated the same score with a 3-2 victory at Claygate.

The biggest win of the day was Trevor's Under 14 Lions, who got back to winning ways with a 10 - 0 win at Hook and Chessington, with Alex G heading he scoring charts on the day with 5 goals.

We now have four boys in the club who are placed in the top five goal scorers of their respective age group (across the entire WSYL) - Under 10 - Sylvester J, Under 12 - Jack N, Under 14 - Alex G, Under 18 -Matthew H.

TEAM OF THE DAY has to be Nick and Gavin's Under 9 Pride. They have been striving for that allusive win after consecutive 3-3 draws in the last two weeks. This weeks they also conceded 3 against Kew Park Rangers Reds ( we need to focus on a bit of defending next session!!!) but the very good news is that they managed to score 5. WELL DONE TO THE BOYS - you deserve it.

U9 Pride
Team Of The Week
Hopefully all the boys that ordered them have got their rain jackets - You might need them!

Finally, as we move towards Xmas. I would like to send a very BIG THANK YOU AND A MERRY XMAS to all the coaches that have done a terrific job this season. We also now have 38 Team or Assistant Managers, all of which put great thought, passion and personal time into making sure that the boys have the very best football experience and that Sheen Lions continues to become a club that we can all feel very proud of - A VERY MERRY XMAS TO YOU.

Thanks to Gordon and Henrik for their efforts in the website (and please add a further commitment to this effort in your New Years resolutions - IT IS A BIG PART OF OUR EXTERNAL FACE TO THE COMMUNITY and your task as managers). Finally a MASSIVE THANKS to Sarah, without whom all this would not be possible.

I look forward to continued success in 2012. Come on the Lions.

Sheen Lions Has The X Factor

Another exceptional days with great victories across the board and some impressive individual performances. We managed to maintain our record of the last 3 weeks with only 4 defeats once again but today an impressive 10 victories and 3 draws, with also the two under 8 teams playing very impressive games against Barnes Eagles and Hampton.

Nidal and Richard's Under 9's have put themselves in contention for the championship with an impressive 4-0 win over Junior Bees with Alfie O netting a hat-trick on his birthday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you. It was a some slight relief for Nidal who's son JJ fractured his leg in the week and everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery. Nick and Gavin's Under 9 Pride didn't quite manage the win they deserve but consecutive 3-3 draws, this time against Waddon shows that the win is coming soon.

Martin and Michael's Under 10 Lions kept their place at the top of the league with a tight 1-0 win over Spelthorne, and David Under 10 Pride had a very good 2-1 away win at Ashford. With the U10's winning both games, the 11's were not going to be outshone and delivered two wins themselves. A very impressive 4-0 win for Alistair and Jon's U11 Lions against Old Isleworth starts to move them towards a respectable position in the Premier League. Game of the day has to be David's U11 Pride who managed a 5-4 win at Meadow Sport helped by Luke B's 4 goals. They are now 6 points clear at the top of their 9 a side league and a big WELL DONE to their coach FREDDY who has had much success with not only this team but with all his sides.

The 12's almost kept the perfect trend of victories with Mel 's Under 12 Lions delivering an important 2-1 win at NPL, don't be surprised to see Mel competing for the championship in the New Year. Bernie's Under 12 Pride maintained their position as 2nd in the league with a 1 -1 draw with Ballers. The 13's certainly didn't let us down either. Alex O netted a hat-trick as Terry's Under 13 Lions delivered a 6-1 win against bottom team Fulham and Matthew and Russell's Under 13 pride had a very good 2-1 win v Kingswood.

Trevor's Under 14 Lions faced Hamsey Rangers the leaders of the top division of the Tandridge League and conquerers of a Premier Elite WSYL side in the last round. The game ended 2-2 at the end of full time but in extra time the floodgates opened but there was no disgrace in their 6-3 defeat. It will put them in good stead for their forthcoming Invitation Cup semi final. Rick's Under 14 Pride team had a very impressive 5-2 away win at Esher who were third in their league and now the Pride will swop places with them to sit third in the table. Jack A netted a very impressive 4 goals in this match.

The 15's didn't quite keep up the trend but Michael and Mark's U15 Lions will not feel too disheartened with their 1-0 defeat at second placed Bedfont. Keep an eye on the progress of the Under 15 lions in the county Cup, as this year they could go all the way to the final. Dean and Sam's U15 Pride also played the team in 2nd place and were the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline.

Brian's Under 16 Pride had a steady 3-3 draw against Tooting whilst Matt's Under 16 Pride found Sandgate too strong on the day.

After last weeks very impressive 2-1 Surrey County Cup win at Hamsey Rangers the Under 18's kept up their claim to be title contenders this season with a 5-0 victory and the prolific Matthew H netted 4 in this game.

All in all a very good day.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK. Firstly, David's Under 11 Pride for a very exciting 5-4 victory at Meadow Sports in their inaugural 9 v 9 year. Secondly Ricks Under 14 Pride who finished bottom of division 3 last year but have turned things around and are now in third place and looking stronger each week.

U14 Pride
Joint Team Of The Week

Thanks to Sarah for driving to Bedfont to collect the waterproof Jackets and trousers from Kit Selection this weekend, and also Gordon C for all his hard work in coordinating orders. I have now sorted 84 individual jackets and 32 pairs of trousers by team so I will deliver at your next training sessions. I don't think I want to see another waterproof jacket this season!!!

Come on the Lions

More Draws Than You Would Get On A Pools Coupon

Almost half the games ended up in draws today, with 7 draws, 4 wins and only 4 losses, and with one game the Under 18 County Cup tie v Hamsey Rangers to be confirmed. You can either say the glass was half empty or as I prefer half full, with some noticeable victories.

To start with the draws. Of the draws - Matt's Under 16 at Farnborough Elite, Alastair and Jon's Under 11 Lions home draw v Raynes Park and Trevor Under 14 Lions table top clash v Junior Bees seem to stand out as the 'good draws' on the day. David's Under 10 Pride had a close encounter with Rocks Lane which ended up 0-0. Gavin and Nick Under 9 Pride may feel the most aggrieved as a 3-0 half time lead ended up 3-3 with the last kick of the game being the equalizer. But that is football!!! David's Under 11 Pride and Nidal's Under 9 Lions will feel a bit disappointed with their 1-1 and 0 - 0 draws respectively.

Terry's Under 13 Lions continued their good form with a 3-1 win over AFC Walcountians, although Russell and Matthew's 13 Pride lost narrowly 2-1 at Elm Grove. Brian's Under 16 Lions had an important 1-0 win over local rivals Barnes Eagles Colts. The biggest win of the day was Bernie's Under 12 Pride who beat the bottom club Epsom and Ewell 9-0 and move into 2nd place in the league. WELL DONE to them. Unfortunately, Mels high flying Under 12's lost narrowly 1-0 to a good NPL side.

This weeks TEAM OF THE WEEK are Michael and Marks Under 15 Lions. Last year's League Cup Finalists moved into the last 16 of the prestigious Surrey County Cup with a 3-0 victory at Curly Park Rangers, a team that had knocked out the WSYL Premier Elite Leaders in the last round; WELL DONE.

We now have 3 teams left in the Surrey County Cup with the Under 18 score v Hamsey from Sunday to be confirmed and Trevor going into battle against ironically against Hamsey next week.

Under 10 Lions And Under 11 Pride Go Top Of Their Leagues

Another good Sunday where we won far more games than we lost . Only 5 losses in 16 games this week with 3 draws and 8 excellent victories. The Under 10's and Under 12's led the way with two victories in both age groups.

What is particularly encouraging now is that so many Sheen Lions teams are competing at the very top of their leagues. In fact now half the 17 teams are in the TOP 3 of their leagues with a couple more in the top 4. CONGRATULATIONS to both Martin and Michael's Under 10 Lions and David's Under 11 Pride who sit proudly at the TOP of their respective U10 Premier and U11 Division 1 leagues.

The under 10 Lions won a close encounter 2-1 against a strong Abbey Rangers side, whilst the Under 11 Pride had an impressive 4-1 victory against Ashford Town. David's Under 10 Pride delivered one of the best results of the day a 1-0 victory against a Kew Association team that were 3 or 4 places above them in the league. Nidal's Under 9 Lions delivered their third win on the trot, a 3-1 victory against the league leaders Old Isleworth Whites. Nick and Gavin's Under 9 Pride were involved in probably the most exciting game of the day against Twickenham Tigers but were unfortunately on the wrong side of a 4-3 defeat. Julian and Jason will be pleased with the performance of their under 8 Lions.

Both the high flying Under 12's did well again . Mel's U12 Lions had an excellent 6-3 win at Staines where Alex W netted an important hat-trick, Nothing is stopping Bernie at the moment and the U12 Pride won 4-0 at Junior Bees. Terry's U13 Lions recorded a good 3-2 win against Ewell Saxons, whilst Matthew and Russell's Under 13 Pride discovered why Woking Colts were top of their league and had to accept runners up spot on the day!

The shock of the day was the loss of Trevor's U14 Lions 100% record with a 1-0 defeat at Lyne Elite, but they are still well up there in the league. I am sure they will bounce back next week. Rick's Under 14 Pride had an excellent win after three second half goals were enough to defeat Corinthian Casuals 3-1. The under 14 Pride are now third in their U14 Div 3 league, which is very encouraging.WELL DONE to them.

Of the three draws - two were good resuts and one was a bit disappointing. The Under 18's managed to dent Barnes Eagles perfect 100% start with a 0-0 draw and the under 16 Pride will be pleased with a 2-2 draw against a strong FC Bracknell side that beat them a few weeks ago. Michael's Under 15 Lions also drew 3-3 against Spelthorne Sports but a win would have put them 2nd in the league and this was a team that they beat comfortably a few weeks ago. However the Under 15 Lions remain in the top 3 of the Premier Elite and face an important County Cup tie next week.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK - Certainly the BEST result was NIDAL'S U9 LIONS against the league leaders so well done to them, particularly as they had a slow start to the season but are now third in the U9 Div 1 - a real turnaround. WELL DONE also to their coach TREVOR.
U9 Lions
Joint Team of The Week
Also MEL's U12 LIONS deserve the accolade for another great victory and currently sit third in the U12 Championship but look likely to go much higher. WELL DONE to their coach MICHAEL.

COME ON THE LIONS

Cup Disappointment But We March On In The League

It was a weekend that saw some very strong performances in the league but a couple of disappointing narrow defeats in the Cup. Once again there were only 4 league defeats across all age groups. There were two big games in the Quarter Finals of the Invitation Cups , both of which were lost in very tight games. Dean and Sam's Under 15 Pride lost AET to Epsom and Ewell and will be disappointed after beating the favorites for the Cup in the last round. Terry's Under 13 Lions came up against a strong Whitton side, who they had held to a draw only two weeks ago. Unfortunately on this occasion Sheen Lions lost a close battle 2-1.

In the league there were many notable victories. Two victories for the Under 12's made them the leading age group. Mel's 1-0 victory over Whitton and Bernie's 5-0 win at Wandgas ensured both these sides continue to fight for honours in their respective leagues. Last weeks joint team of the week, Nidal's Under 9 Lions delivered a very impressive 6-3 victory at Junior Bees who were above them in the league. Equally impressive was John's high flying Under 18's 9-0 victory against Links, with 4 goals from Matthew H. Michael and Mark's Under 15 Lions delivered their third win in succession, a 3-1 victory at Chipstead to climb to third place in the U15 Premier Elite. Martin and Michael's Under 10 Lions maintained their position at the top of their Premier League with a 5-2 win at Spelthorne. The prolific Sylvester J scored a hat-trick in this game and leads the Sheen Hot Shots table. Trevor's Under 14 Lions remain the most successful Sheen Lions team with their 10th consecutive victory and maintaining their 100% record in all competitions. Russell and Matthew's Under 13 Pride completed the double over KPR with a 4-2 win. Davids high flying Under 11 Pride delivered the most dramatic score and match of the day a 5-5 draw with Feltham, and David's Under 10 Pride also had a draw, 2-2 v KPR.

This weeks JOINT TEAM OF THE WEEK are two sides that are having their best season ever. Firstly., Matthew and Russell's Under 13 PRIDE have risen to the dizzy heights of third in their Div 3 league. It has been a real turnaround this season for them so well done to the boys, managers and their coach Michael.

U13 Pride
Joint Team Of The Week
Also another team who are having their best season ever in Division 3 is Bernie's Under 12 Pride. A 5-0 win on Sunday is almost taken for granted now but it is clear that there is a great spirit in the squad and every chance to get promoted to Division 2 next season. WELL DONE also to them and Trevor their coach.

U12 Pride
Joint Team Of The Week
I would like to add a couple of words about our younger sides. In line with FA guidelines we are unable to publish scores but we believe we have now got the strongest Under 8 set up in our club history. Two very strong sides under the management of Julian and Jason for Lions, and Eric's Pride have started really strongly and the future looks very bright (as they say!). I would also like to thank Simon for all his efforts in helping recruit our Under 7 Development group and the great work our coach Sam Grayson has done in developing their skills. The quality of boys, the number of boys and level of interest is fantastic every week. As such we have decided to pull forward our Sheen Lions Mini Soccer Open Day to SATURDAY 4th Feb 2012 for next season and very shortly we will be announcing all details for the current YEAR 1 boys (next years Under 7) as well as offering other boys across a range of age groups to come along. Please pass on via word of mouth to interested parties in parallel with our future announcements.

A BIG THANKS to Sarah for organising the club jackets for the Managers, Assistants and Coaches. We should all look the part now so don't forget to pick them up a pay outstanding dues to Sarah.

Keep up all the good work.

Sheen Lions Remembers

Remembrance Sunday is always an important day in the calender and it was great see boys across all ages from all teams unified in observing two minute silence today.

On the field, it was another outstanding day with only 4 defeats in 16 games.

The U10's, 11.s 14's led the way with two victories apiece.

Both Under 8's teams were in action and provide very impressive performances.

Nidals's Under 9 Lions found the form they have been promising in the last few weeks with a 7-1 win at Worcester Park, whilst Nick and Gavin's Under 9 Pride lost so narrowly 1-0 to a strong Esher side.

Martin and Michael's Under 10 Lions team went back to the top of the league with a 6-3 victory at Raynes Park, whilst David's Under 10 Pride had an exciting 3-2 victory at Whitton. In the Under 11's Jon and Alastair provided their second win in consecutive weeks with a 4-1 win over Corinthian, whilst David on his return from a very successful New York marathon played a high flying Meadow Sports team and had an impressive 2-0 victory.

In the 12's, Bernie's Pride continues their good form with a 5- 2 win over Junior Bees but unfortunately Mel's Under 12 Lions went out of the County Cup 3-0 against a good Melwood team. The Under 13 Pride played an important league game in the top 4 and scored late to earn a 2-2 draw v Barnes Eagles.Terrys under 13 Lions went down at Feltham. The Under 14's was all about goals. Rick's Pride won 6-3 at Barnes Eagles to go fourth in the league, whilst Trevor's Lions went one better with a 7-3 victory at Worcester Park in the Surrey County Cup to progress into the third round with hat-ricks apiece for Rory J and Patrick B.

Michael and Mark's 15 Lions delivered their best Premier Elite league result of the season with an impressive 4-1 win over a strong Mitcham Park side to continue their run of good form.

Probably the most exciting match of the day was Brian's Under 16 Lions who played in a game that seem to swing one way then the other before eventually winning 4-3 v Claygate. Unfortunately the Under 16 PRIDE lost a close game in the Surrey County Cup at Tongham in North Hampshire losing 4-3 AET. John's Under 18's look like they will be title contenders this year with a 6-1 victory over SCR colts.

TEAM (s) OF THE WEEK this week is a tough choice. I will give it to two teams again. The Under 11 Pride and the Under 9 Lions.

Under 11 Pride - after completing the New York marathon in 3 hours and 47 Minutes last week, David managed to refocus and produce a great league win against very tough opposition . Now 2nd in the table the Under 11 Pride have responded to 9 v 9 football really well, and much credit should also go to their coach Freddy.

Nidal's Under 9 Pride have had a tough start in their first league season but have not been overwhelmed by any opponents . A 7-1 victory at Worcester Park is richly deserved. WELL DONE TO BOTH TEAMS.

U9 Lions
Team of The Week

We also wish Michael Morgan well on his long overdue holiday . Five of his six teams won this weekend which is great credit to the hard work he has put in, but we offer him an enormous vote of confidence!! and look forward to seeing him next week. WELL DONE

Progress In The Cups - 6th November

It was a very busy day today with 19 Sheen Lions teams in action including the U8s, competing in both league games, Invitation and League Cups and two teams kicking off in the Surrey County Cup. 9 wins, 1 draw and 7 defeats  means it was another very succesful day**.

A BIG welcome to the new Under 8 Pride team who played their first official game today under the management of Eric Capp. Julian and Jason's Under 8 Lions have already started really well.

However , the best age groups today were the Under 15's and Under 13's with two wins apiece. Terrys Under 13 Lions continued their good start with a 6-0 win over Fulham whilst Matthew and Russells' Under 13 Pride had an exciting 3-2 victory over Hanworth . I was delighted with Jon and Alastair's Under 11 Lions who were due a win and certainly delivered with a 9-0 victory over Carshalton. Mel's under 12's continued their impressive winning streak with a good 3-2 win over Sandgate. Last weeks team of the week, Brians Under 16 Pride played a good Molesey Juniors side and came away with a credible 3-3 draw.

Unfortunately two of our high flyers - Michael and Martins Under 10 Lions and David's Under 11 Pride lost to Sutton and Chipstead respectively. David Hughes - The Under 11 Pride Manager is running the New York Marathon this weekend so I think he will have a bit more to think about. WE ALL WISH HIM LUCK. Ricks Under 14 Pride lost narrowly to the runaway league leaders Whitton and Nidal's Under 9's lost by the odd goal in 5 against Claygate.

Without doubt the best league result of the day was Dean and Sam's Under 15 Pride who played AC Fulham the league leaders in U15 Division 1, and 6/7 places above them in the league, Pride won the game 1-0. A fantastic result.

In the Surrey County Cup both Michaels and Mark's Under 15's and John Under 18's progressed to the next rounds with convincing 4-0 and 12-0 victories against Molesey Juniors and Curly Park Rangers respectively. Robbie C netted 5 in the Under 18 win.

Three teams played in the Quarter Finals of the League/Invitation Cups with a chance to progress to the semi Finals at Imber Court. Bernie's Under 12 Pride teams put in an incredible performance against Spellthorne who are top of Division 1 which is two leagues above Bernie's mid -table Division 3 team. With minutes to go it was only 1-0 to Spelthorne but a late penalty made it 2-0. Matt's Under 16 Pride reached the semi Final stage of the League Cup for the second year running with a 2-1 victory against Hook Utd. Whilst Trevor's Under 14 Lions played a team in the Division above them for the second time in the competition and returned from Caterham with a 5-1 win, helped by an Alex G hat-trick.

My TEAMS OF THE WEEK have to be the two semi finalists - Matts Under 16 Pride and Trevors Under 14's. WELL DONE TO THEM.

 Keep up the good work!

U14 Lions - Team Of The Week

U16 Pride - Team Of The Week

**In accordance with The FA's best practice we do not reveal the results for the U8 age group.

Team Of The Week - 30th November

It may be a week to go until fireworks , but there were some sparkling performances today. 15 games played with 7 wins and 1 draw.

The Under 14's and Under 12's led the way with two victories apiece. Trevor's Under 14 Lions maintained their 100% start with a 5-1 win at Worcester Park and Ricks Under 14 Pride won 3-1 in an entertaining game at Manorcroft Utd. These two sides have been transformed since last season. The same can be said of Bernie's Under 12 Pride who beat Whitton 4-1.

Mel's Under 12s Lions have carried forward last seasons good form and are pushing towards the top of the Championship after a 2-1 win at Rushmore. Julian and Jason's Under 8's maintained their impressive start with another close game, which is quite unusual for this age group.

Nidal's Under 9 Lions were not to be undone and also secured an impressive 0-0 draw with high flying Meadow Sports. Whilst David's Under 11 Pride unfortunately lost their 100% start with a very narrow 3-2 defeat at Moormead, they still sit joint top of their league.

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Martin and Michael's Under 10 Lions who have gone top of their Premier league following a 3-0 win at Roehampton Rangers. The prolific Sylvester J scored a hat-trick in this game.

After securing their first league win last weekend, Dean and Sam's U15 Pride continued their theme of exciting matches with a late winner in a 3-2 victory over Worcester Park. Michael's Under 15s faced Leatherhead FC the run away leaders of the Premier Elite but were just caught short in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

My TEAM OF THE WEEK is Brian's Under 16 Lions. How encouraging it is to see them score 8 goals in an 8-3 victory at Claygate Royals. Jake L managed the second hat-trick of the day in this match. WELL DONE to them.

So this weekend we saw the end of the BST , with the clocks going back. Let's just hope for a better winter than last year and some more good news in the Cup competitions over the next couple of weeks.

Team Of The Week - 23rd October

Only 3 games played on Sunday but still some good performances. Dean and Sam's Under 15 Pride came back from behind to beat Kingstonian's 2-1 with two late goals to register their first league win of the season. Last season they were promoted up to Div 1 so it was an important confidence boost for the team.

Matt's Under 16's Pride faced a high flying Grayshott team and conceded an early goal which led to a 2-0 defeat in the Premier Elite.

TEAM OF THE WEEK were the Under 18's who recorded a convincing 8-3 victory v Junior Bees with some tremendous goals and move into the top 3 in the Under 18 division 1.

Hopefully a bit more football on Sunday. However, this week 32 boys from the Under 14s and Under 15s will play at the Chelsea training facilities in Cobham as part of the Chelsea Foundation Course. We are also proud to see one of our young coaches Dean Steninger employed now full time by Chelsea F.C.

Team Of The Week - 16th October

Not such a sunny day today with 10 defeats in the 16 games played , 1 draw and 5 wins. The good news was that 3 out of the 5 teams playing in the various league or invitation cups progressed through to the quarter finals.

Terry's Under 13's lost their 100% record but will take encouragement from a credible 1 - 1 draw with league leaders Whitton. They meet Whitton again shortly in the quarter final of the cup. Whilst both Ricks Under 14 Pride and Mel's Under 12 Lions went out of the cup , there were some notable victories. Matt's Under 16 Pride won 2-0 at Royal Elite. Trevor's Under 14s had a very impressive 4-2 victory against Molesey Juniors who were top of Div .1, the league above them. Bernie is probably still celebrating his 13-1 victory on his birthday last week but will be delighted with a 1-0 victory against Eagles United who are top of their own Div 3.

In the league, David's U11 Pride have gone clear at the top of the U11 Div 1 with a great 4-0 victory agaist Molesey Juniors, which retains their 100% record. A great achievement - WELL DONE to them.

However, this weeks TEAM OF THE WEEK are Martin and Michael's Under 10 Lions . The faced a very tough match against local rivals Roehampton Rangers who were riding high in the league. A 6-1 away victory puts them equal top of the Premier League. In addition Sylvester J scored his twelth goal of the season and is both Sheen Lions leading scorer but also top of all scorers in all the Under 10 leagues.

We have a number of hotshots who are in the top ten of their respective age groups goalscoring charts.

  • Under 10 Sylvester J
  • Under 12 Jack N
  • Under 14 Alex G and Rory J
  • Under 15 Jamie C
  • Under 18 Matthew H

Good luck to those few teams playing next week.

U16 Pride - 25/50/75/100/125/150 Appearances

Over the last few Sundays a number of U16 Pride players have reached some impressive appearance milestones (only counting league and cup games):

Michael - 25 games
Olly K - 50 games
Cameron - 75 games (now playing for U16 Lions)
Eric - 100 games
Ryan - 125 games
Frederik - 150 games

Congratulations and well done to all of you!

A Truly Extraordinary Sunday - 9th Oct

With a full fixture list at Palewell Park today , Sarah invited Frank Thompson , General Secretary of the SYL to come down and take a look at our new facilities. Frank has been a great support to the club and was one of the key drivers behind the introduction of 9 v 9 football. He was extremely complimentary about the club and made a number of observations worth sharing:
(1) How great it was to see the 7v7 , 9v9 and 11v11 pitches together
(2) The wonderful sight of blue and white hoops across the spectrum of 6 pitches
(3 ) How he had noticed how much progress had been made in the quality of performance on the pitch.

The COACHES and you the MANAGERS and ASSISTANT deserve great credit for this. And now you have a cupboard for your nets as well. Thanks to Sarah again.

However, what Frank could not have predicted was the fantastic set of results for the day. It was a mixture of League fixtures, County Cup and Invitation Cup today. 18 games played , 12 victories , 2 draws and only 4 narrow defeats, particularly the U18s who were unlucky to lose AET 2-1 in their invitation cup. There were also more hat-tricks today than in a Tommy Cooper stand up routine.

I will try and sum up the victories, which is particularly hard as there were some outstanding results.

The Sun is shining but not on the pitch - 2nd Oct

A freak October weekend for weather but unfortunately the results were not quite as sunny as previous weeks. Six wins and two draws from 16 games meant we lost 50% of our games today. Saying that , there were some great results with the Under 16 age group leading the way with two great victories for Matt and Brian's teams respectively. Mel's Under 12s had the biggest win of the day with a 9-1 victory at Molesey Juniors and David L's Under 10 Pride delivered its third win in a row. This is a team that could not find a single win last season. David H's Under 11 Pride had an impressive 3-2 away win at a strong Old Isleworth team which retains their 100% start in their 9 v 9 league. Three teams still hold a 100% start - Terry's 13 Lions and Trevor's 14 Lions as well . Unfortunately, last weeks team of the week - John O'Brien's Under 18's lost their unbeaten record this week.

TEAM OF THE WEEK must be Trevor's Under 14 Lions . With a depleted squad, due to late injuries, meant that they were only able to put 9 players on the field. Despite this, the 9 boys came back from 2-1 down to beat Mitcham Park Colts 5-2 and go top of their Under 14 League. WELL DONE. Rory Jones and Alex Griggs of the Under 14's also lead the scoring stakes with 7 goals a piece. this season.

Let's try and get all the new team photos up on www.sheenlions.com website over the next couple of weeks.

Up For The Cup - 25th September

As always with the Cups, you get some ups and downs but on the whole we had some impressive performances:

The Under 12 s led the way with both teams progressing in the cups in dramatic style. Mel's Under 12's won on penalties in the League Cup against Walton from the league above whilst Bernie had a tense 5-4 win at local rivals KPR colts.

Trevor's Sheen Lions Under 14s earned an ironic tie with Sheen Lions Pride in the next round as they maintained their 100% start with a 4-0 victory against Corinthians.

The Under 15s had mixed fortunes with last year's League Cup Finalist Lions losing in extra time against a strong Kingston Juniors side whilst Dean and Sam's Under 15 Pride picked up their first win of the season with a convincing 8-1 win at Barnes Eagles Colts in the invitation cup.

Last weeks team of the week - David's Under 10 Pride continued their good form with a 3-1 win against Hampton Diamond and Terry's Under 13 Lions maintained their 100% start with a win against Surrey Predators

In one of the few league games Matt's Under 16 Pride side maintain their unbeaten start in the tough Under 16 Premier Elite with their third draw in 3 games against a strong Farnborough side.

TEAM OF THE WEEK has to be John O'Brien's Under 18s with a 3-1 League cup win against Kingstonian Youth from the Premier Elite. The 18's also maintain a 100% start.

THANKS to Sarah for getting storage space for nets and flags at Palewell Park. It will be a great help.

Round Up - 18th September

The 9 v 9 posts are up, the cafe is now open at Palewell Park and the sun continues to shine. Eight wins this week , and five draws amongst the 18 games played means another great weekend for the club.

The two U13 teams both continued their 100% winning records and it was good to see two wins from the U14s , particularly the Pride with a convincing 8-1 victory over local rivals Barnes Eagles.

The U18s and Under 10 Lions have made impressive starts to the season with their second wins in two weeks.

The Under 8's secured their first ever win in only their second game but TEAM OF THE WEEK is the Under 10 Pride who secured their first ever win with a 4-2 victory over Rocks Lane. Fully deserved for the persistence and hard work, over the last year.

The Invitation and League cups start next week so let's gets some Lions representation in the Finals again this year.

Remember to keep your web pages up dated and get your NEW TEAM PHOTOS on to the website and I notice nearly half the teams are starting to use the Notice Board functionality to provide squad details and match logistics. Please look at other age groups for guidance - it is very easy to do.

Geoff

And we're off! Message from the Chairman.

The goals at Palewell are up and we are off! A big thanks to Sarah, our Club Secretary, for a herculean effort in getting the show on the road: Three hundred new match kits, three hundred registrations and the migration of 7 a side teams to Palewell plus getting pitches (including new 9 a side) ready for the big kick off on Sunday.

And what a great start! Out of 14 teams from U9 and upwards in action we managed to get 9 wins, a draw and only had 4 narrow losses. We scored 50 goals and let in just 25. Special mention goes to the U14 Lions and new manager Trevor Hodge for kicking off their campaign with a 10-0 win.

For the first time in many a season all teams are wearing the same kit and the new QPR navy hoops simply look great, as modelled by the U13 Pride in the photo.

Well done to all teams for such a terrific start to the 2011-12 season - we still have another 317 league fixtures and a minimum of 23 cup games to complete over 32 Sundays!

Geoff

Lions To Be Seen In Africa

Sheen Lions is supporting GrassRoot Soccer a charity dedicated to stopping the spread of HIV. They uses the popularity of Soccer to get serious and important messages about HIV to hard to reach young people in Africa.

Sarah Street has put together 13 sets of shirts from our older kit and our U11 manager Jon Darlison has arranged for DHL to ship these free of charge to Cape Town.

All Sheen Lions teams will be turning out in the new QPR style hoops next season so you can expect to see many more Lions shirts in Africa soon.

Boots For Africa - Clear Your Cupboards

Our Secretary, Sarah Street is very keen for Sheen Lions to support the Boots For Africa charity. Take a look at their website to find out more about what they do.

If any of you have unwanted or outgrown football boots (adult of child) cluttering up your cupboards please pass them on to your team's manager before Easter. Please tie each pair together using their laces.

Kris Hughes (U15 Pride) is helping Sarah to co-ordinate the collection,  managers should pass on their collection to either Kris or Sarah.

2011 Presentation Evenings and Awards

Five hundred and forty people attended our annual Presentation Evenings on Thursday 19th May for our U8 to U11 age groups and on Wednesday 25th May for our U12 to U18 age groups. Both events were hosted at the Bank of England Club in Roehampton where many of the squads train during the winter on the floodlit pitch.

During the season players and their parents play matches and train in their small friendly groups but this annual club event shows the scale of Sheen Lions and youth football in Surrey. Sheen Lions is currently the third largest club in the Surrey Youth League fielding 18 teams with 290 registered players. This season we played 298  league games, 149 at home at Palewell and Sheen Common, and 43 cup games. 108 clubs field 452 teams and 7,176 players in the Surrey Youth League. The even is an opportunity both to congratulate our players on their sportsmanship and to thank our organisers for all the work they put in behind the scenes.

As always most of the thanks is due to to our Club Secretary Sarah Street for her faultless administration that ensures that we have players registered, pitches to play on, referees for games and her help with League issues. Sarah is a dedicated QPR fan and as part of our 25th anniversary, and to mark Sarah's long involvement and critical contribution to Sheen Lions our Chairman Geoff Parmiter presented Sarah with a framed QPR shirt signed by their all of their first team. I am not sure if Geoff also arranged QPR's promotion to make sure this was a particularly special gift but knowing him I would not be surprised!

We are proud of all our players, demand for places at clubs like Sheen Lions is high and each player deserves the trophy they receive during these evenings. It is nice to acknowledge special contributions to the team and you can see a list of the award winners here.
The presentation evening is also a chance for the players to say thank you to some of the other people that enable them to play football. Each of our teams is run by parents who manage and administer their squads, run the line, put up and take down the goal nets and flags and always my favorite, pitch sanitation. The most important part of the players development is our wonderful coaches. The contribution of all these many people was acknowledged on each evening with presentations to the Managers and Coaches.

Next season we are looking to have 19 teams and will add a mini soccer development group. We are consolidating all our training and match days at Palewell where we will have new mini soccer pitches and a 9-a-side facility for the U11 age group. All age groups are already busy building their squads for next year and many Sheen Lions teams are still playing in the Summer tournaments.

Thanks to Lucy Palmer, Simon Fanthorpe and Simon Roberts for their photos. You can see all their photos by clicking their name.

Surrey U14 League Cup Final - Sheen Lions 0 - 3 AFC Wimbledon

A brave battling performance from Sheen Lions in the U14 Surrey League Cup Final on Wednesday evening under floodlights at Carshalton Athletic ground but there was no shock result.

AFC Wimbledon are an academy class side so this was a tough game for Sheen. Last year as U13s Wimbledon were English Champions and are unbeatable at Surrey League level this season; they have only lost to one academy side in a full set of fixtures. Once Wimbledon settled Sheen were allowed very little time on the ball and found it very difficult to win the tackles. Despite the pressure Sheen stayed in the game and had more chances to score. Just before half time our forty goal plus striker, Dan had to come with an injury and two minutes into time added on Wimbledon took advantage of a slight hesitation to score at a critical time.

Starting the second half with a lead allowed Wimbledon to relax and they quickly added two more goals when they robbed the ball and rushed forward to score with a clever finish and then with a great header. The cup was won but Sheen kept going and defended strongly to contain Wimbledon for the remaining 25 minutes.

Congratulations to AFC Wimbledon, they are a fantastic side and deserved winners.

After the game our U14 manager Geoff Parmiter said"

WELL DONE to all the squad. I was really pleased that all 15 boys had a good run out and hopefully got the taste of what a Cup Final is really like. Once you get the appetite for Cup Finals , you simply want more and now it is up to us to make sure we win it next year. All I ever ask is that the squad give me their very best and last night looking at the grimaces on their faces I knew in my heart that they really had. Michael, Mark and myself were very proud of you.

A BIG BIG Thanks to everyone that made the effort and supported us last night. I know Sheen Lions v AFC Wimbledon at Carshalton (and an entry fee of £3) versus Barcelona v Real Madrid is a tough call but I was delighted to see so many coaches, managers and parents associated with the club. Cup Finals are about occasions and as supporters you all made it that bit special for the boys. Hopefully you all took something from watching AFC Wimbledon (I certainly do every time I watch them) as they are everything we all aspire to in Youth football.

Sheen Lions Train With Chelsea Academy Coaches

Nearly 50 boys from Sheen Lions had the pleasure of training at Chelsea FC's prestige training facilities at Cobham last week.

Sixteen boys from each of the Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 squads enjoyed a full days training with Chelsea Academy staff.

Michael Morgan, coach for Sheen Lions said 'the boys had a great opportunity to learn new drills and witness the first class facilities of a professional club'. This is something we hope to do more of in the future.

It was an exciting game, with QPR winning 2-1 and gaining three more points towards their quest for promotion to the Premiership.

We plan to do another partnership game in the early part of next season.

Sheen Lions U18 Win Surrey Premier Elite

Congratulations to our U18 side.

In their last home game and penultimate match for Sheen Lions on 6th March a crown of around 200 saw Sheen fight back from 2-0 down to a 2-2 draw with Kew Park Rangers to keep their grip on the title.

Yesterday a 72 seater bus was booked to take a large support to Dorking for their final match against Brockham Badgers, and the boys did not disappoint. A goal from Hill gave a 1-0 half time lead which kept the crowd on their toes, but another goal from Hill, and goals from Major (penalty) and Tyler sealed a 0-4 victory and won Sheen Lions the Surrey Youth League Premier Elite Division title by a single point.

With 14 league goals for the season Tom Hill is the top scorer in the division and with 28 points for the U18 age group, so an additional congratulations to him.

U11 Football Goes 9 v 9 in 2011/12

The Surrey Youth League have announced that for the 2011/12 season their U11 age group will play a 9 v 9 format. This age group will continue as 9 v 9 in 2012/13 and move to 11 a side at U13 as the league transition to 9 v 9 for the U11 and U12s.

The FA have published recommendations for  9 v 9 and SYL are still finalising the rules to be adopted. As an indicator only these may be the rules:

  • A Junior size pitch of 80m x 50m
  • 16'x7' goals
  • A maximum squad of 18
  • A match squad of 14 with roll on roll off substitutions allowed
  • A maximum playing time of 30 minutes each way
  • Size 4 ball
  • Fully qualified and registered referees, (not Mini Soccer only).
  • Each club to provide one assistant referee.
  • The offside rule will apply
Sheen Lions will be entering U11 sides in the SYL next season and arrangements are being made to provide a 9 v 9 pitch at Palewell. We will field two and possibly three sides considering the optimal squad size,  the demand and standard the of players available.

Note that players that qualify as U10 or younger are not allowed by FA rules to play 11-a-side or 9-a-side matches.

Expansion At Palewell

After discussion with the London Borough of Richmond; from the 2011/12 season Sheen Lions will use Palewell Park for all their matches and training. Mini football matches and training previously located at Sheen Common will move to Palewell. This will allow Sheen Lions to consolidated its activities and allow the LBRUT to improve the cricket facilities at Sheen Common. We may still use the 11-a-side pitch at Sheen Common on exceptional occasions.

LBRUT will be reconfiguring the Palewell pitches so we have mini soccer pitches on the space that is currently pitch 1 and to include a new 9 v 9 pitch needed for U11 football next season. Areas will designated for Saturday training to allow space for Sheen Lions and other current users of Palewell.

Once the current refurbishment work at Palewell is complete we will have storage facilities available and Mangers will no longer have to store and transport corner posts and nets.

The FA Community Awards 2011

The search begins for Surrey grassroots football clubs, coaches and volunteers.

The FA and its Community Partner have today announced that nominations for the second FA Community Awards are now open. The Surrey County FA is calling on people from across the region for nominations for the eight award categories so that they can be recognised for their achievements.

The eight award categories are:
• Outstanding Contribution Award
• The FA Community Club Award
• The FA Development Club Award
• The FA Charter Standard Club Award
• Volunteer of the Year Award
• Young Volunteer of the Year Award
• Coach of the Year Award
• The FA Charter Standard League Award

Closing Date 18th March 2011

Sunday 6th March - Palewell

Sunday 6th March it will be the end of an era. The U18s are the senior team at our club and this season's U18s play their last HOME game on Palewell Common at 12.30.

Many of these boys have been together for since U8; with 7 of the original 11 boys still in the squad of 18. Some boys have now completed over 250 games for Sheen Lions.

If they win this match and their final away game on 13th March then they will win the Premier Elite. It is very tight; if Kew Association can also win their remaining three matches then it will be decided for Sheen on the aggregate scores in their head to head matches. Neither team can afford to slip.

Our Club Secretary, Sarah Street is very keen to celebrate this occasion and would like as many of the Club's players and parents to come to the game on 6th March to support. The U8 and U9 teams will provide a guard of honour.

SYL Cup Semi Finals

We have four teams through to play in SYL cup semi-finals. Matches take place at Imber Court over the next few weeks.

Two teams play Cup semi-finals this weekend 13th February. Good luck to U14 Lions who play Wandgas Youth and our U16 team who play Esher.

U15 Pride will play Wycombe Wanderers HDC in their cup semi-final on 27th February and U11 Lions will play Frimley Green on 6th March.
